Strengthening Brazilian soy’s global market access

Soy farm Brazil

Brazil is the world’s leading exporter of soy; in 2023, it produced almost 152 million tonnes, accounting for 16% of the country’s total exports (Trase, 2023). With the impending implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in December 2025, European markets now require verified deforestation-free supply chains, making farm-level traceability essential for continued market access.

Brazil’s national monitoring systems (such as PRODES, MapBiomas, and DETER) provide valuable and respected insights into deforestation trends, forming a strong foundation for policy and research. These systems are well-established for broad-scale monitoring, but were not designed for the near real-time compliance at the granularity required by international buyers. For example, PRODES and MapBiomas rely on manual validation, meaning alerts can be published months after deforestation occurs, whereas DETER, although near real-time, may under-detect deforestation due to its lower resolution and limited biome coverage.

Comparison of Brazilian open source data and Satelligence

Satelligence data, however, is purpose-built for supply chain monitoring and compliance, providing near real-time alerts, high-resolution mapping down to 0.1 ha, and coverage across all relevant biomes, including the Amazon, Cerrado, and dry forest regions. Whilst Brazil’s national datasets provide context for broader monitoring, Satelligence allows companies to demonstrate compliance with EU and other international standards and avoid the risk of market exclusion. Given that soy represents a significant share of Brazil’s exports, any disruption in access to European buyers would have substantial economic consequences.

Satelligence provides independently validated (CIAT, EY), high-resolution, near real-time monitoring, along with carbon and decarbonisation insights, enabling Brazilian soy producers to meet global buyer expectations, secure market access, and support sustainable forest management.
